Born in1939 in the German city of Augsburg and studied German literature at Stuttgart university. He worked as a film critic from the middle of the 60s, for the national radio ("Bayerischer Rundfunk") and for German language film magazines. Eder has published several books, among others, on Andrzej Wajda, Luis Bunuel, on Nikita Mikhalkov and Andrei Konchalovsky, Arturo Ripstein, Im Kwon-taek, Nagisa Oshima and two books together with Alexander Kluge. Between 1986 – 2007 he worked as a programmer of the Munich International Film Festival besides being an Adviser for a variety of festivals. Eder is the General Secretary of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) from 1987. He lives and works in Munich, Germany.
